tuesday withdrawals

Ever since I became an office boy I'm going through withdrawals

My cafes are like nicotine. And I miss them. So much. I need them back in my life…

…So, now I'm that aimless guy with the new Mac in the corner, sipping on a tasse du cafe au lait; that artsy guy with the thick framed glasses who has internet in his apartment, but instead spends his time drawing artistic inspiration from real people in real life. That guy who is a bit of a local coffee shop snob and avoids Starbucks whenever possible. That guy that stops in to say hi to his favorite baristas and get a double shot-in-the-dark to go. With just a touch of cream. Maybe in a to-go mug…

Christmas Saturday

Well, Christmas has come and gone already. Brother and I stayed down here and celebrated together with PBR and Facebook Video Posts. It was a good time.

I got clothes for Christmas, but not socks, which is good; however, I do need socks, so that probably wouldn't have been that bad of an idea. Oh well.

I cleaned my room, which is phenomenal.

Oh. And I got a parking ticket, which means I really live here now.

oh my december

Okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, okay, I'm sorry, Becca. Merry Christmas. Happy Hanukkah.

This is a brief update of the last, like, four weeks.

I got a job as an office boy. I'm sexually harassed, which is fun. And I'm really good at mailings. Also, I'm looking into workman's comp for paper cuts.

Additionally to that job, I met with the big boss and he gave me two big contract design jobs. Whoa.

So, consequently, I had to buy a new computer on Friday (along with an iPod, a printer and a mouse). It should all be here this week. Merry Christmas, Me.

I had a theatre-gasm week… I went to Spring Awakening on a Tuesday, Our Town at NTC on Wednesday, and the opening night party for A Christmas Carol on Thursday. Hey, can't beat free food, wine and beer. After the Christmas Carol Party, I ended up underneath one of the theaters on a mini-mini-golf course. Words cannot describe it. Sorry. But it was phenomenal.

I went out with lesbians and they bought me French Toast. It was superb.

I had brunch with some wonderful ladies.

"talk to strangers" wednesday

So, in February, I signed up for CouchSurfing.com in an attempt to surf through Ireland during my week-long return voyage.

Since moving to the Big D, however, I get weekly emails about CouchSurfing "Mixers" where strangers come out, drink for cheap and meet people—people traveling, people who live here, people who just moved here. It's basically a gold mine for making friends.

So last night, I finally attended my first Mixer. I bought along my buddy Frank too. It was fascinating. People from everywhere. Weird people. Nice people. Over all, really cool people.

…One guy named David who was a failed Incan Priest in a past life, so he was traveling back to Peru. He also educated us on the notion that cats were extinct thousands of years ago and replaced with mind controlling space monsters. Seriously.

Really, you can't beat $2.00 draft beer, half-priced appetizers and meeting thirty friendly people who just love to travel and meet other cool, friendly people who just love to travel.

And I'm off to the theatre!

sunday eve 2

Also, I like watching students reading and studying really hard, with really big books and calculators and shit.

It makes "real life" okay.

sunday eve

I am helping a couple play Scrabble in the cafe around the corner. I like this.

Also, things I like: dogs in coffee shops.

The table that I found but have yet to purchase on CraigsList

holy thursday

So. I woke up to the fire alarm today. That was pleasant. I swear to god, if the fire doesn't kill you, the heart attack will. There were lights flashing and I couldn't find my pants… it was—it was a mess.

I tried a new coffee shop today. Didn't take.

Tried to go to Panera. No outlets. WHAT?

So, I came back to a usual coffee shop.

tuesday update

Recently, I've become friends with the AM. Strange.

I survived last week's blizzard. As did my Honda.

Did some work for SLANT Theatre Project in New York.

Worked out a logo for Congregations Acting for Justice and Empowerment in Indiana.

Maybe will hear about the DAM job this week?

I was La Pinta for Halloween. (Accompanied by my bro as La Santa Maria, my cousin as la Nina, and bro's gf as Christopher Columbus).

I am totally going to have pizza rolls and a Dr. Pepper for lunch.

Today might just be a really good nap day

Yeah… I think so…

the best tuesday in the world

This is an awesome story:

So I get an email today from a girl named Kelly:

We met last night at the Mat Kearney concert. By the power of google I stumbled upon your website - didn't think it would actually work - but here I am being slightly awkward and potentially creepy. One of my best friends moved to Kentucky after graduation and has been having a tough time adjusting to a new area because he doesn't know anyone. Seeing as you are in a similar situation I wanted to give you my number in case you ever need anything or decide to check out the amazing-ness that is Boulder, CO.

Happy Tuesday!

Kelly

So, I email back…

Hi Kelly!

It's really nice of you to email! (Not awkward or creepy). However, unless I was sleep-concerting, I don't think that we actually ever met. But man, sounds like a fun concert—, I wish I was there! (I'm sure the "real" Matt was pretty fun too). Actually, I think it's pretty awesome that you went out on a limb to help someone out.

Take care and I hope you find the real Matt,

I have a laugh and post as my facebook status.

Only to get a reply from my friend Matt:

oh man this is pretty funny.

so turns out that Matt (Me) who lives in Denver and just graduated from the University of Evansville with a graphic design degree met a girl named Kelly at a concert last night.

only problem is you and I both meet all that criteria!

so knowing only that she went googleing and apparently thought that you were me.

rather funny really!

Phenomenal. I love the internet.

Oh, and I got a job interview tomorrow.

Minus my ambition which makes me un-hireable because hopefully I'll get a "real" job. S'all good though.

Also, I found out another special skill I have—Sleeping. I mean, I always knew this was a special skill, but only recently have I realized how good I am at this.

Unlucky Wednesday

Joe's been in Denver for two years.

He's never had a table on which to eat.

I move to Denver a month ago.

I find myself going to coffee shops, not for internet, but for a solid surface with four legs on which to design.

We decide to find a badass, vintage formica & chrome table on CraigsList.

After weeks of searching, we find one! It's great! It's swell! It comes with chairs! Perfect!

We email, they email back, we settle on a price, we plan to pick it up (a ways outta town) Tuesday night.

Phone off.

Oh. Cool.

Wednesday… Email from Seller…

It will not be possible to connect with us for a while. I have decided to remove the vintage Chrome Table and Chairs listing from Craig's List and not to sell at this time.

I'm sorry for any inconvenience. Thank you.

Nancy

WTF NANCY?

Thanks a lot, Nancy. Oh, and really, no inconvenience, Nancy. Don't worry, Nancy. We'll be fine eating off the floor, Nancy. Like dogs, Nancy.

Lucky Tuesday

New kicks… New outlook on life

Another Monday…

Monday, I found out that the regional manager of Caribou has to pull my application from hyperspace. It makes little–no sense. It's all good though…

But I had a much more exciting adventure after my coffee/internet fix

I got to take Joe's car eighty blocks north to get his oil changed! (I like to think I'm something of a personal assistant—in exchange for meals, booze and rent).

I roll in at 4:00pm. Oil change? What? Like twenty minutes? Sure.

Sweet! Vending machines! I get a Coke and some Gardettos to pass the time. I also get some sweet MSNBC action on the tv. Obama not a citizen? Roman Polanski arrested! Health care reform!

Forty-five minutes go by…

The news stories start to repeat

Another forty-five minutes…

Okay, time for the big guns. I'm buying Skittles

Another thirty minutes

Six o'clock: Are you Joe?

Close enough! (With a mouthful of Skittles.)

And I'm on the road.

Monday, September 28, 2009

Friday

Well, I woke up into happy hour. Nothin' happier than that.

Thursday, September 24, 2009

Thursday

Apparently, I'm "friendly enough" to get hired.

Wednesday, September 23, 2009

Wednesday

It's raining.

The worst kind of day for being unemployed.

…Where're the chips and salsa?

Tuesday, September 22, 2009

Tuesday

Preface: Sleepin' in today was rough. I got a crick in my neck that just won't go away.

Okay. So. For about a week now, I've almost maybe had a job at Caribou Coffee. And today is the day—I'm waiting for a call from the manager…

And my phone is dying.

Rewind—I get up (oy, my neck), drive to a local coffee shop, Pablos, to get wireless and a cup of the cheapest coffee available. (I am running out of the quarters I stole from my dad two weeks ago). The place is packed. There is one open table in the way-back behind two Spanish-speaking adults.

And I get situated to check my email and Facebook (only the most important things for this art major) and the wireless won't show up.

I wait.

I watch. People all over.

Coffee's too hot to drink.

I spy an open table in the center of the shop. Clearly this will be the answer to the wireless problem.

Clock on the wall says four. Watch says three. I'm time-warped.

No wireless.

I ask a mustache, "Is there a password to the wireless?"

"We don't have internet"

…Now I was in this same coffee shop three weeks ago and got wireless just peachy. Awesome. I drink up my hot coffee and make a few more observations while watching 6th Street go whizzing by.

I'll go back to Fluid Coffee Bar around the corner from apartment. Drive. Phone beeping. Dying… Dying…

Repark. Dying…

Go into stairwell, run down to street level, go for the door… and…

No handle. It was broken off and lying on the ground.

Really?

Up the stairs, around the parking garage, around and around. Dying…

Cross the street. Through other parking garage. Dying…

Tell landlords that handle is broken off. I get a look like, Asshole broke the door and he's blaming it on someone else.

Finally get to MORE caffeination and internet. And a plug for my phone.

No job emails.

No job phone calls.

Good Tuesday.

What Job?

Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication.

Welcome to my blog.
